UNIT45 upgrades its intermodal 45ft container range
to meet customers' demands for environmental solutions
Intermodal exhibition in Hamburg
(29 November - 1 December 2011)
The Dutch 45ft container specialist UNIT45 has
announced that its entire range of intermodal products has been upgraded to
provide its clients and in turn, their customers, with more
environmentally-friendly transportation solutions. Full details will be
provided at the forthcoming Intermodal show, which will open in Hamburg towards
the end of November.
As in previous years, UNIT45 will be displaying its
products at the exhibition and clients, including potential customers, will
have the opportunity of inspecting this equipment.
Two containers will be featured, a dry freight unit
coated using a water-based paint and bamboo flooring, and a diesel-electric
reefer unit with, for the first time, an integral rear door/tail lift having a
capacity of 2500 kg. This much simplifies loading when still trailer-mounted or
when a suitable loading dock is not available.
UNIT45's 33-pallet diesel-electric reefer unit is
proving very popular with European intermodal customers as it is able to
operate on rail over long distances such as Rotterdam - Italy, Spain, Poland,
Romania, Greece, Russia etc.
Meeting the needs of clients with a green agenda,
UNIT45 says water-based coatings will now be available on all UNIT45 containers
as an option as will be lightweight bamboo floors that do not require treating
with polyurethane (PU) coatings. Of course, traditional coatings will still be
available to those who prefer them as will the more traditional white wood
flooring treated with a PU coating.
Traditionally, containers were coated using
conventional solvent-based systems but by using water-based paints, it is
estimated that solvent emissions can be reduced by as much as 70 percent.
UNIT45 is using water-based coatings supplied by the Korean manufacturer SKS,
with whom UNIT45 has a long-standing relationship. Water-based paints are
zinc-free and offer superior corrosion protection.
According to UNIT45's Managing Director, Jan Koolen,
bamboo offers a number of real benefits:
"UNIT45 was a pioneer in using white wood
flooring but is now switching to bamboo as its preferred choice of flooring
material. Bamboo is truly an environmentally-friendly product as it grows very
rapidly and is produced in plantations that are managed for sustainability.
Globally, thousands of trees are being saved by industries switching to bamboo
and UNIT45 is proud to be associated with this trend.
"But this is not all. Bamboo is light,
strong and long-lasting, meaning that it is now possible to go green without
any penalties. As it is available in long length planks and panels, it is ideal
for use in containers."
Shortly to be launched is UNIT45's Wing Container,
which like the curtain-sided container, offers full access on both sides, plus
end doors. However, the Wing Container will also meet the needs of those
shippers who want more secure full side access. Folding solid doors make the
Wing Container the ideal solution for wines, spirits, beer and tobacco, or any
electrical products, says Jan Koolen. On top of this UNIT45 is able to provide
a safety and security system on these units.
