Thomas Miller secures early ISO 9001:2008
certification, enhancing status of mutual associations it manages
Thomas Miller, the international specialist insurance
services business, has become one of the first companies to upgrade from
ISO9001:2000 to ISO9001:2008. This achievement was recognised at the company's
London headquarters on 4th August, when David Moorhouse, CBE, Chairman of
Lloyd's Register, presented Hugo Wynn-Williams, Chairman of Thomas Miller, with
its new ISO 9001: 2008 quality management certificate.
All companies that currently have ISO 9001:2000 are
required to achieve the new ISO9001:2008 standard by 2010.
The Through Transport Club was the first Thomas Miller
club to achieve ISO certification in 1996. The UK P&I Club, UK Defence
Club, ITIC and UK War Risks Club followed in 2001 while the UK division of
Thomas Miller and Signum Services, the group's investigation unit, attained
this status in 2004. The Isle of Man, Piraeus, Japan, New Jersey, San
Francisco, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney offices have also secured
ISO 9001 certification. Now with ISO 9001:2008, BLP Insurance, which provides
buildings defect cover for residential and commercial property, has just joined
the Thomas Miller clubs successfully assessed by Lloyd's Register Quality
Assurance.
"Thomas Miller has always prided itself on first rate
service levels to club members and customers," commented Mr. Wynn-Williams.
"The decision to obtain ISO certification and to be assessed by an external
party came out of a desire to demonstrate to our customers that we were serious
about maintaining good working practices and to standardise procedures
worldwide. We had no hesitation in exposing this management philosophy to
rigorous third party assessment.
He continued: "Several customers have achieved
equivalent international standards and require a similar commitment from us. In
recent years, ISO certification has become even more significant as the UK's
Financial Services Authority (FSA) and other regulators recognise the value of
the documentation and internal quality audit requirements."
Achieving certification recognises Thomas Miller's
extensive efforts to develop a management system which fully reflects its
commitment to customer service, ensuring consistency between offices, promoting
cost effective and efficient systems and providing a safe and well-controlled
working environment.
To reach the high standards required by ISO 9001:2008,
Thomas Miller has had to demonstrate how all elements of its management system
work together to meet customer requirements. This includes linking the business
with regional and local targets and individual performance standards,
identifying training needs and listening and acting on feedback from club
members about performance.
