South Africa's Transnet Port Terminals aims higher
with 30 new Kalmar CSC straddle carriers
Kalmar Industries, part of Cargotec Corporation, has
been awarded a contract by Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) of South Africa to
supply 30 CSC440 straddle carriers for its operations at Durban Container
Terminal (DCT) in the Port of Durban. The new order further strengthens the
long-term partnership between the two parties and cements Kalmar's position as
TPT's preferred supplier of yard handling equipment to South Africa's busiest
container port. The machines will be delivered starting in July 2008 with the
final units arriving January 2009.
The CSC440 straddle carriers being supplied to TPT
will feature Kalmar's proven 7th generation technology consisting of an
enhanced CAN-bus PLC diagnostics system, fly-by-wire controls and
PLC-controlled engines, and a hydrodynamic drive system.
Due to the rapid growth of cargo volumes at the Port
of Durban, the new machines from Kalmar will enable TPT to stack even higher.
Durban Container Terminal currently operates with a mix of 3- and 4-high
stacking blocks. With its new fleet of Kalmar straddle carriers - all capable
of stacking 1-over-3 high and lifting 40 tonnes - the yard's stacking density
will quickly increase, producing more desirable productivity levels.
Mr Logan Naidoo, Capital Projects General Manager,
TPT, comments:
"With container traffic in South Africa on
the rise, we needed a fast and cost-effective solution to accommodate the
demand for more storage capacity at Durban Container Terminal.
"Like the many times before, TPT turned to
Kalmar for assistance in flexibly converting the terminal's storage capacity
because of its continuous offer of reliable equipment and expert service."
Early in 2008, Kalmar received a request from Transnet
Limited, parent company of TPT, for 22 E-One+ rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes
for the country's newest port development, Port of Ngqura, on the Eastern Cape.
This order was in response to the terminal operator's great success with Kalmar
equipment at its other South African facilities. TPT deploys 18 E-One RTGs and
two Kalmar reachstackers at its Pier 1 Container Terminal, as well as more than
140 Kalmar straddle carriers at its operations in Durban, Cape Town and Port
Elizabeth. Also this year, TPT engaged Kalmar to provide a comprehensive
maintenance contract for all of its rubber-tyred equipment operating at Pier 1.
Durban is Africa's busiest port and has the southern
hemisphere's largest and best-equipped container terminal. The Port of Durban
handled 2 million TEU in 2007 and expects a sizable increase in 2008.
