Kalmar wins order for 12 E-One RTGs from Santos
Brasil S/A
The largest terminal operator in South America has
awarded Kalmar an order for 12 E-One rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes. Santos
Brasil S/A, operating at the Port of Santos, presented Kalmar with the contract
for 7+1 wide and 1-over-6 high units after experiencing great success with its
current fleet of five Kalmar conventional hydraulic RTGs delivered in early
2006.
The new 16-wheel units will be equipped with Kalmar's
autosteering and container position verification system, Smartrail®, and
delivered between September 2007 and January 2008. The 16-wheel model offers a
reduction in ground load pressure over the traditional eight-wheel model, thus
minimizing wear and tear on the terminal surface.
Santos Brasil S/A currently operates five Kalmar RTGs
and five RTGs of another make at its terminal. The operator is gradually making
the transition from reachstacker to RTG and road truck operations. In 2000,
Kalmar Brasil sold 11 reachstackers to Santos Brasil S/A, and after each
machine logged approximately 25,000 operating hours, the two companies agreed
to a refurbishment contract.
The terminal of Santos Brasil S/A handled 1.1 million
TEU in 2005 - approximately 20 percent of Brazil's entire container throughput.
The Santos and Sao Paulo areas are home to about 40 percent of the GDP in
Brazil. Santos Brasil S/A's traffic is expected to increase as it is the only
terminal with sufficient area, berths and access roads.
Kalmar's Terminal Development Service will complete a
study regarding Santos Brasil S/A's operations and how the terminal could be
developed in the future.
