Kalmar and Transnet Limited extend their partnership
to tackle South Africa's growing container volumes
Kalmar Industries has been awarded an order for 22
E-One+ rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from South Africa's Transnet Limited,
parent company of port operator Transnet Port Terminals (TPT). The units will
operate at the country's newest port development, Port of Ngqura, on the
Eastern Cape. Deliveries will commence in October of this year with the final
cranes expected to arrive in April 2009. The new port is expected to be fully
operational by mid 2009.
The 7+1 wide and 1-over-5 high RTGs outfitted with
Bromma spreaders, will come equipped with Kalmar's autosteering and container
position verification technology, Smartrail®.
This order further strengthens Transnet Limited's
long-term partnership with the equipment manufacturer. Based on the success of
its 18 Kalmar RTG cranes employed at TPT's Pier 1 Container Terminal in Durban,
the port operator turned to Kalmar yet again for the supply of an
environmentally friendly and reliable stacking system.
Edwin Briggeman, Managing Director, Kalmar Industries
South Africa (Pty) Ltd, comments on the order:
"Transnet Limited and TPT have come to expect
productive handling solutions from Kalmar, and with its additional order for
RTGs, the terminal operator knows it will receive quality cranes and excellent
service."
Hamilton Nxumalo, General Manager Equipment at TPT's
head office, said that reliable equipment paired with true partnership is the
reason for his company and Kalmar's shared success in South Africa.
He adds: "Transnet Limited is responsible for the Port
of Ngqura's cargo handling and logistics management solutions. We know from
past experience that Kalmar provides innovative and quality cranes which will
help us meet the high expectations of this project.
"The Port of Ngqura is destined to be South
Africa's answer to its booming export market. Transnet Limited is confident
that with Kalmar's reliable equipment and excellent aftermarket support, we
will help the country prosper by efficiently handling its growing container
volumes."
The Port of Ngqura, situated at the mouth of the Coega
River in Algoa Bay and 20 kilometres east of Port Elizabeth, received its first
vessel this month. The National Port Authority, South Africa's port development
agency, says Ngqura is designed to accommodate the country's growing export and
transhipment market. The new deepwater port is also expected to handle the
goods produced by manufacturers in a new industrial zone located nearby. The
port is being constructed initially to handle up to 970,000 TEU utilising two
births, and is anticipating this will grow to 2 million TEU utilising four
births.
TPT (previously South African Port Operations)
recently awarded Kalmar a maintenance contract for all of its rubber-tyred
equipment operating at Pier 1 Container Terminal, comprising 18 Kalmar E-One
RTGs, two Kalmar reachstackers and a range of other-branded machinery. A
dedicated maintenance team of approximately 20 Kalmar service technicians will
work around-the-clock, 365 days a year to ensure that Pier 1 operates with the
highest possible machine availability.
