SNP enhances its suite of 'green' cranes with another order for ten Kalmar E-One RTGs

Kalmar Industries has received an order from Vietnam's Saigon Newport Company (SNP) for a further ten E-One rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, destined for Phase I of Tan Cang-Cai Mep International Container Terminal, currently under construction on the Thi Vai River as part of a greenfield port development just outside of Ho Chi Minh City.

Identical in design to the ten green, productive and uncompromising all-electric E-One RTGs ordered by SNP in April this year for its growing Cat Lai container facility, the 6+1 wide and 1-over-5 high units will come equipped with Kalmar's container position verification system, Smartpath®. Delivery is scheduled to be completed in November 2008.

Commenting on the latest order, Kaarlo Veräväinen, Kalmar RTG Crane Sales, Asia, said:

Construction of the first berth of the Cai Mep container terminal began at the beginning of this year. Phase 1, scheduled to open by the end of 2008, will feature a 300m-long berth and a 20 ha container yard capable of handling 650,000 TEU per year.

Under Phase 2, due for completion in 2010, SNP will complete the remaining 600m of berth and 40 ha of yard space, giving the terminal an annual handling capacity of 1.1 million TEU.

The Cai Mep terminal is the first part of the Cai Mep-Thi Vai International Port Complex development designed to serve Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai province and Ba Ria-Vung Tau province. As a deepwater river port located close to the sea, the Cai Mep International Container Terminal is expected to become a large transit port for the southern region of Vietnam.

SNP is also preparing to launch its Long Binh inland container depot (ICD). When the facility begins operations in 2008 it will feature 80 ha of container yard space and a fleet of Kalmar reachstackers.
