Experienced automation supplier Kalmar acquires
terminal software provider ACT BV
Aiming to further shape the future of automated port
terminals, Kalmar has acquired Advanced Cargo Transhipment BV (ACT). The
Netherlands-based company, a former business unit of Frog Navigation, will
assist Kalmar in its strategy to be the preferred supplier of integrated
automation technology by increasing its resources in automated horizontal
transportation R&D and delivery projects.
The parties have agreed not to disclose the
transaction value.
Jorma Tirkkonen, President of Kalmar Intelligence
& Automation (KIA), comments on the acquisition:

handling equipment and terminals. We are now even better prepared to face the
rapidly increasing interest and demand for these solutions."
ACT, a spin-off company of Frog Navigation based in
Utrecht, the Netherlands, is an expert in developing and marketing equipment
navigation control and terminal operation control hardware and software for
complex logistics systems and processes using automated vehicles and equipment.
Applications, for example, include straddle carriers, shuttle carriers and
automated guided vehicles as well as traffic management and control systems.
Kalmar increases focus on container handling
intelligence and automation ACT will be integrated into Kalmar's
dedicated business unit, Kalmar Intelligence & Automation, which focuses on
the marketing and development of onboard smart features for container handling
equipment, integrated control systems and remote maintenance products in
cooperation with customers and partners. The unit also runs a state-of-the-art
automation test facility to better aid the integration of its intelligent
applications with its customers' container handling equipment and terminal
operating systems.
Kalmar has delivered and now supports a fleet of close
to 1,000 applications such as container verification, positioning and
monitoring systems, remote service monitoring software, and reporting systems.
Kalmar's range of innovative onboard products and
automated systems today includes:
- Fleetview: a real-time monitoring system that
optimises the deployment of container yard equipment.
- Smartrail®: an autosteering and container
position verification system for RTGs.
- Smartpath®: a container position verification
system for straddle carriers and RTGs.
- Remote Machine Interface (RMI): a tool for remote
machine monitoring, maintenance tasking and reporting suitable for use with all
Kalmar equipment.
- Automatic stacking cranes (ASC): an automated
handling solution providing high productivity and stacking density for large
terminals. Sophisticated measuring, positioning and supervisory control systems
with safety, redundancy and fault reporting.
- Autostrad: unmanned straddle carrier handling
system.
