Hellenic War Risks
The Hellenic Mutual War Risks Association (Bermuda) Ltd,
founded in 1960, is managed by Thomas Miller. It provides war risks cover for
more than 2,300 vessels, including over 1,200 bulk carriers, nearly 500 tankers
and 280 dry cargo ships. Over three quarters of the Greek beneficially merchant
fleet is on its books. The total tonnage amounts to around $40 billion in
insured values. At the end of 2003, the Hellenic had net assets of around $36
million.
The Association's position as the world's largest war risks
mutual is unchallenged at a time when the need for comprehensive cover has
never been greater. Nine Eleven, the ramifications of war with Iraq, an
increase in piracy and the general climate for terrorism have intensified the
focus on this aspect of marine insurance.
