DCT Gdansk
DCT Gdansk SA has been selected by the Port of Gdansk to
design, construct and operate the new, independent deep-sea container port that
will be the largest of its kind in Poland. Negotiations with the Port Authority
have resulted in an agreement providing a 90-year lease.
Increased demand for consumer goods in Poland and trade with
other EU countries has highlighted the need for a modern, deep-sea container
terminal in Gdansk. The port offers a number of unique advantages as a
location: It has deep-sea direct access to the Baltic and benefits from
deep-water (15m+) access at all stages of the tide and, unlike most Baltic
ports, remains ice-free throughout the winter.
Construction of DCT Gdansk began in October 2005 and the new
container terminal received its first ship on schedule on 1 June 2007, with the
arrival of the 822TEU Team Lines vessel, Götaland. Two post-Panamax
ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and three rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes are
currently in operation, although by September 2007 the terminal will be
operating with three STS cranes and five RTGs with attendant yard space and
back-up machinery to give the facility an annual throughput capacity of
500,000TEU.
