IMCL boosts DCT Gdansk's feeder connections

The new DCT Gdansk deepwater container terminal is boosting its feeder connections with the arrival of IMCL Inter Marine Container Lines. With immediate effect, this well-established operator will provide a weekly link between DCT, Hamburg and Bremerhaven and has indicated that it is considering adding a second weekly service in the near future.

Established in 1996, IMCL offers a wide range of feeder services covering the North Sea and Baltic trades. It is a member of the Lemissoler Group, which is headquartered in Limassol, Cyprus.

In September 2007, Lemissoler acquired Gdynia-based feeder operator Baltic Container Lines from its previous owners and merged its operations with those of IMCL. Today, IMCL operates seven ships, each maintaining a weekly service linking various Baltic ports with Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam.

DCT Gdansk's General Manager, Fred Kamperman, welcomed IMCL's arrival:

"IMCL is one of the major players in the Baltic feeder market. Its customer base, together with that of Team Lines, which has been calling DCT Gdansk for several months, means that with these two lines, most of the major deepsea carriers are now able to offer their customers in Asia and elsewhere the option of routing their cargoes via DCT Gdansk. We are seeing a steadily growing number of containers now coming our way and these are being processed smoothly and efficiently."

He continued:

"DCT Gdansk is now really beginning to move. We have made a huge investment in start-of-the-art handling equipment and support facilities, including our rail link, and we have ice-free deepwater access.

"The recent decision by Containerships to switch its traffic to DCT Gdansk has further boosted our volumes but we still have ample capacity to handle more traffic and we are currently in discussion with a number of other operators who have recognised the significant potential benefits of channeling their traffic via DCT."

Now fully operational, DCT Gdansk comprises a 36 hectare container terminal capable of handling 500,000TEU per annum and a roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) berth adding an extra 160,000 freight units of capacity. The terminal's 650m long quay is served by three post-Panamax ship-to-shore cranes and five rubber-tyred gantry cranes, and offers 16.5m water depth alongside. With tried-and-tested road and rail connections linking the facility to major inland distribution centres throughout Poland and its neighbouring countries, DCT Gdansk offers a new dimension in container port operations.

A second phase of development will be brought online according to demand, ultimately increasing the terminal's capacity to one million TEU per annum.

Planning is also well advanced for a major logistics park to be constructed close to the DCT Gdansk facility.
